Edouard Manet - The Ragpicker (c. 1869)
Photo from wikipedia
Probably one of my favorite paintings. Nothing extravagant. Just a simple man down on his luck. Maybe begging for scraps from passersby. His whiskers and hair all grey and white -- dissheveled. In his tattered clothes, holding a walking stick and what I assume can be large piece of cloth that can be taken for as a cloak or a blanket to cover himself on those cold nights on the dirty streets. Or looking worn out and tired from a hard day's work.
This painting hangs in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA.
